An important part of our job is to run the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance (CWAA). This is a specialist division of the charity because our youngest patients need a different range of treatments. The operation is an integral part of the Wales Air Ambulance service, providing the expert care required for paediatric and neonatal patients who need air support.
Noah’s Case Study:
You never know when you might need to use one of our helicopters, for emergencies or transfers, and this was the case for mum-to-be Shaylynn. Shaylynn’s life was turned upside down after going into labour 13 weeks early. Baby Noah was born prematurely at the Special Care Baby Unit in Glan Clwyd hospital back in 2016, where he received urgent treatment to keep him alive and well. Once the doctors decided that Noah was stable enough to be transferred to a baby unit near the family home in Carmarthen, they knew that little Noah – weighing just 2lb 12oz – and the neonatal transfer team faced a long and daunting trip by road. Our Children’s Wales Air Ambulance division was able to spare Noah and the team the four-hour journey with a flight between the hospitals. Noah was kept warm and safe in our advanced, oxygenated flight incubator. The flight was 49 minutes. Shaylynn said: “Everyone was amazing and made us feel comfortable. The hospital and air ambulance teams worked really closely together and knew exactly how to look after Noah. It was so reassuring to get him closer to home.”
