UPDATED 20/11/2018
In June 2018 the Isle of Wight Zoo (home of The Wildheart Trust) provided forever homes to five rescued ex circus tigers: Mondo, Girona, Natasha, Zoppa and Antonella from Primadomus, a rescue centre in Spain. These unfortunate tigers were born into a Spanish circus where they lived until they were handed over in November 2017.
During their time at the circus they were kept in miserable and overcrowded conditions in a tiny concrete cage all for the benefit of providing entertainment for the public.
In order to accommodate the tigers the zoo built new facilities at the cost of over £100,000. Through Justgiving, we have raised a big portion of the money needed to date and we thank everyone who has donated, but there is still a way to go in order to reach our target.
In the last 4 months our dedicated, specialised team have worked tirelessly to ensure the animals are getting the loving and enriching place they deserve to call home. Here is a quick update on our beautiful tigers:
Zoppa – Is really affectionate and loves attention – she is however very lame and awaiting investigations to help us understand why, and how we can help, now that her strength is back.
Antonella – A shy and quiet cat when she first arrived, but now flourishing with a new found confidence. We believe that she was shackled on her left leg in the past causing her lameness now - investigations are to take place soon.
Natasha – Our youngest addition, is lively and playful and loves to stalk.
Both Mondo and Girona came to us incredibly shy. They wouldn’t move without instruction; but we’re incredibly proud and happy with their progress now.
Both our majestic boys have health issues however and both are lame. We recently did a full medical on Girona and an update on him can be found on our ‘What’s On’ page on our website.
