Story
Access to Palliative care is a major problem in Ethiopia. Now more than ever, as a result of the drought. Only an estimated 15% of the people in Ethiopia are able to access healthcare. Most illnesses present late in their course creating a huge burden. Ethiopians suffering from HIV and AIDS defining cancers, and other life-limiting illnesses, especially the poor, chronically ill and bedridden, have limited access to, health services including palliative care and medication. As a consequence, they unnecessarily suffer in pain and distress, resulting in among other things, a very poor quality of life and well-being.
WHPCA and our partner, Hospice Ethiopia are helping 12,892 people affected by life limiting illnesses such as HIV and AIDS, and cancers; access palliative care through the mobilisation of Iddir. Iddir are burial societies formed to help communities defray burial expenses, and are now use to support health care.
