Story

**FINAL UPDATE**
We did it!!! Thanks to all of our fantastic fundraisers, generous donors and supporters, we reached the target and completed the mammoth project! Well done and thank you to everybody involved. This has been a challenging and demanding appeal but we made it and that's all down to the support of people like you.

Although the Our Space Appeal is not currently an active appeal, we are still raising money and accepting donations for the unit to help with the upkeep. Technology will keep on improving and updating and with money coming in, it means we can make sure we can offer our young patients the best possible surroundings and distractions.

To make a donation or find out more, please call the fundraising office on 0116 258 8709.

**UPDATE**
Great news- with existing pledges of support and donations already in, we have £1million towards the £1.4million target! Thank you so much to everybody that's donated so far and to those that have pledged money to us. Let's keep it up!

Many Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page.

We are embarking on an ambitious project to create a world-class Children and Young People’s Cancer Unit for 0-24 year olds at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Leicester Hospitals Charity, with support from the Teenage Cancer Trust, and the Robbie Anderson Cancer Trust, need to raise £1.4 million for the project to go ahead. If the money can be raised in time, work on the new unit will start in summer 2012.

Currently, children are treated in the children’s hospital. Young adults have specialist treatment  in adult oncology and haematology wards and outpatients. Other treatment  is spread out across different areas of the hospitals. This can be particularly difficult for teenagers and young adults both when first diagnosed and treated for cancer and if they need to make the transition from children’s to adult cancer services.

The new integrated unit will totally transform the environment in which children, teenagers and young adults are treated. The careful use of design, lighting and colour will turn an ordinary hospital ward into a space that children will find stimulating whatever their age.

This will include:

Dedicated medical and play facilities for children including games and television.

Separate medical and recreational facilities for teenagers and young people aged 13 to 24, including games, television and access to the internet.

Dedicated outpatient and day case treatment areas within the children and young people’s cancer unit (to avoid the need where possible to use the adult services)

An integrated team of specialist nurses, doctors and healthcare professionals from adult and children’s medicine.

Specially trained staff to assist with social activities, education and psycho-social issues

Support for families with a child or young person on the unit

Tim Diggle, Head of Fundraising said: ” Raising £1.4 million in the current economic climate is going to be a challenge, but anyone who has had experience of a child with cancer knows how important this new unit is. We really hope that families and communities across Leicester Leicestershire and Rutland can support this campaign and help provide the best possible facilities for all children and young people living with cancer.”
