Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

When our daughter got diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at the age of 3 yrs, we were devastated. We nearly lost her. She was very unwell and close to being in a coma. Érin is now 9 yrs old. She has an insulin pump which she is attached to 24 hours a day. She is also attached to a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which checks her blood sugars continually and alerts us if she is having a hypo. You see, she needs insulin to keep her alive, but the insulin can also kill her. It is a constant struggle to try and get it right between working out how many carbohydrates she has eaten, how much exercise she has done, what the weather is like, how she is feeling emotionally etc. All these thing have an affect on her blood sugar levels and getting it right is impossible (I'm good, but I'm not a functioning pancreas). I sleep with Érin most nights and set my alarm so I can check her blood sugar levels and try and keep her alive through each night. It is emotionally and physically exhausting for both of us and a strain on the whole family.

Érin is extremely physical. She loves to dance! She has learnt how fragile life is and understands why she has to have her feet, eyes and kidneys checked. It is a lot for a child to have to cope with, but she does. I don't know how.

Too many children/adults are dying from this illness. Some receive a diagnosis too late, others just never wake up after a night time hypo, and others are killed by the hideous complications of the disease.

Please help me reach my target for this fantastic charity which is working to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
