I am running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on 8th October for The Brain Tumour Charity. Those of you who know me will know that I'm by no means a natural runner, but I hope I can use this opportunity to do something positive and raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
On the 8th of August 2009, just over one year from diagnosis, I lost my Mum to a brain tumour. Sadly, since this time I have seen far too many other families affected by this devastating disease.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40, however only 2% of the £500 million spent on cancer research annually in the UK is spent on brain tumours. The prognosis for many people diagnosed is poor, and only 19% of adults survive for more than five years from diagnosis.
The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront in the fight against brain tumours, through the funding of vital research, and development of clinical trials with the aim of improving the quality of life, and increasing survival time of those affected. They also provide a much needed support network for everyone involved. Brain tumours are often diagnosed late in the disease process, and through education and raising awareness of symptoms people can be diagnosed and treated earlier, with greater hope of a cure.
Any donation, however great or small would be hugely appreciated and will really make a difference! Hopefully in time we can find a cure for this condition!
