Story

Welcome to our JustGiving Page and thank you for showing an interest in what we are doing.   We guess it is likely that you have been told about our website by one of the team or perhaps by a mutual friend and know something about this challenge.

Here's a bit more information ….

WHO ARE WE

Our team has come together from 2 key sources - both with a sporting theme.

A number of us have a connections with DC Steamers football club who play in the Reading Sunday League.  3 of us played in our 1st ever game 25 years ago and our partners are all involved in this cycle ride.  We've been joined by a number of younger / more recent players and friends.

There is also a strong  contingent.  With their best rowing days behind them now, these chaps are up for a new challenge !

WHAT ARE WE DOING

As the name implies we are "Cycling Britain" (lengthways not widthways) from  to John O'Groats.  We intend to complete the 964 mile route in 12 days at an average of 80 miles per day. (Click here to see our route) For most of us this is the toughest physical challenge we have undertaken and, as you read this, we are stepping up our training to be ready to take it on.  So on one level, we are doing a big bike ride.  More importantly what we are doing is raising funds that will support deserving cancer charities.  We have set ourselves a fundraising target of £15,000 and with your help we will do our best to meet it.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS

·         One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our lifetime

·         One in four of us will die from it.

·         Excluding certain skin cancers, there were almost 290,000 new cases of the disease in 2005.

·         Treatment rates for many of the most common types are improving rapidly but there is still much to do.

These are the bald facts but only tell part of the story.  For cancer patients and their friends and family, diagnosis and treatment is a traumatic time and recovery rates, whilst improving, aren’t good enough.

In common with so many people we have all been personally affected by cancer in some way in recent years.  All of us have lost someone we care about to Cancer, several within the last few months.  Our team includes a cancer survivor and, since we started planning the event, one of our number has been diagnosed with the disease (albeit we are hopeful that the cancer has been caught early).

Completing this event means a huge amount to every single member of the team.  We know there will be a few sore backsides and other sore body parts besides, but the knowledge that we are raising money for such a worthy cause will spur us over the finish line.  Please give generously to one or more of our chosen charities by following the link(s) to the relevant justgiving pages
