Story

I started drinking and taking drugs, like most teenagers, to experiment and fit in.  Over time, I used and drank to avoid feelings around issues that life brought.  Life became harder and so did the drugs I took.  Years went by and after many futile attempts of detoxes; I was trapped in a cycle of addiction.  I didn’t know a solution to my problem because I didn’t know I had one.  I didn’t know the hurt I had caused my family.  Drugs compelled me. I had no regards for anything else.  My life revolved around playing “catch up”.  Always catching up to my next hit, a moment in your vein, a lifetime of pain!  I eventually ended up being imprisoned for drugs.   I was introduced to Narcotics Anonymous (NA) whilst in prison.  Members of NA came in every Monday to share their experiences. I listened, and as time went on, I identified with their stories and they became a source of inspiration.

I had considered relocating to give myself a fresh start and Weston-Super-Mare seemed a suitable place.  I learned of the different services available and of the supportive recovery community.   I was given this opportunity to take part in a long-distance bike challenge to raise funds and awareness for Help for Addiction; a new charity which provides support and access to treatment for those struggling with addiction and their families.

Not long ago, I was completely controlled by drugs. I was isolated, living alone in squalor and a nuisance to society. Now I’m preparing to ride 345 miles from Weston to Durham, I’m moving into my own flat and best of all, I’m reunited with my loving family. It’s a miraculous turn-around and I want to help others to achieve this new way of life.

I don’t have much money to give but I can train to be ready to complete that gruelling journey to the north and put in the time and effort needed to raise money for this worthwhile cause. Please help me to help others by supporting me in my fundraising efforts. I am so very grateful for the support I have received and I am honoured to be able to raise funds to help others access the care and support they need to beat their addictions.
