Devizes to Westminster Canoe Challenge · 29 March 2013

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

We have Finished

As you all know me and Claire finished the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Challenge yesterday and arrive to the bells of BIG Ben striking 10am whilst paddling acrossed the finishing line. A truely brillant way to finish. Luckly no sore hands and feeling rather good. Just a little tired after a 4.30am get up. Claire has been amazing and never moan once, and as Arran would say "oresome" especially with having to put up with me in the back! We met a lovely guy call Tony who was paddling a canoe on his own and going like s**t off a shovel! He told us that 2 years ago he did the event with his wife to be. Two weeks later the marriage was off!! Lucky I am still happly married! I am now working on Claire to do the straight through event next year! I couldn't ask for a better partner. Thank you for everyones support and all the donations. Especially to my amazing Dad and Shaun who supported and put up with us for the four Days. With out them this adventure would have not been possible. Also to Claires parents who looked after May and Arran and to my dear mum for all the up dates. Over the last year Mary and Robin have raised overa amazing £5000 for leukaemia and lymphoma research, which is truely inspirational. Far harder than paddling 125 miles. So far you have helped to raise another £1000 for this amazing charity. We are now packing up the van and heading to scotland for 10 days with the Arran and May. More canoeing on Lochs and Arran can't wait to go crabbing!!! HAppy Adventures all an thank you. Mike and Claire xx

Arran

2 years ago our son Arran aged 4, started his treatment for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. He went through 10 courses of chemotherapy, 12 lumber punches under general antithetic and a cocktail of other medicines to counter act all the side effects. Arran attended Manchester Children’s Hospital for almost a year. He is one of the lucky ones, as during his time in hospital survival other children lost their battle with cancer. Arrans survival is all down to successful research that came up with his treatment plan, but more research is needed to save more lives. This is why we have decided to support the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, Beating Blood Cancers.

Arran is now 6 and recovering really well. We feel that it is our chance to help raise awareness and money for an important cause.

The Challenge

Over the Easter weekend we will be taking part in the annual Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. It starts in Devizes, Wiltshire and finishes at Westminster Bridge in central London, opposite the Houses of Parliament.

The race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington. The final 17 mile section is on the tidal portion of the Thames. We are entering the Endeavour Class which requires us to complete the challenge in four days.
