I'm running the London Marathon to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society. You might like to know why.

When I was a teenager my grandmother, Dorothy Brown, suffered from vascular dementia. I remember it was a very emotional and upsetting time for all her family, especially my mother. Back in the 70's, our family didn't know much about dementia or about what we could do to help my gran cope with what was happening to her, and we had no idea of what to make of the way my gran's personality changed as she became ill. The only relief available to my grandfather,  the main person caring for my gran, came from other members of the family. It was fortunate that we were all living close by.

Thirty years have now passed. My father-in-law, Tony Appleton, has been suffering from vascular dementia for a number of years, and the Alzheimer's Society has been a great source of information for his family, and the local branch in Stroud has provided support to Tony and his wife Pam. This has included members giving Pam a break from the pressures of being a full time carer. I'd like to take this opportunity to give our thanks to those who have provided that support.

The Society's research is very important to me too. Many of us are likely to suffer from dementia as we get older, and I believe the research the Society funds is improving the odds for ourselves, and for our children.
