Charity Football Match Carlsberg v Soap All-Stars · 10 May 2014

St Rocco’s Hospice provides specialist care and support across Warrington, helping those who are coping with a life-limiting illness. It costs over £5 million each year to run the hospice – which means we need to raise over £12,000 each and every day just to keep running.

On Saturday 10th May Tony Steenson and his Soap All-Stars football team gave up their time to play a charity game against a Carlsberg select team made up from employees representing depots Stone cross, Tingley, Gravelly Park & Northampton Brewery.

The day was a great success and enjoyed by families, friends and the general public that had come to catch a glimpse of the Soap stars on show. We were privileged to be hosting a team consisting of Ralph Little (The Royal Family / Two Pints of Lager & Packet of Crisps) Adam Thomas (Emmerdale) Chris Bisson (Emmerdale / Corronation St / East is East / Shameless) Chris Fountain (Hollyoaks / Corronation St) Alex Lawler (Mike Bassett:England Manager / Dream Team) Chris Perry-Metcalfe (Grange Hill / Waterloo Rd) Rhodri Giggs (Brother of Ryan Giggs) Dave Ryan (ex Man Utd) and Playing in Goal for our Carlsberg team was Legendry Aston Villa goal keeper Nigel Spink (made 361 appearances for Aston Villa and also played for Millwall & West Brom) Nigel was the perfect role model with his calming influance and and laid back approach aswell as playing a fantastic game for us.

As the teams were lead out by Stone cross Driver John Imrie playing the Bagpipes, and mascots Joshua Morris & Isabelle Kinsey representing St Margarets Cof E School, and Warrington Wolves mascot Wolfie. The teams lined up and shook hands before taking their positions for the start of the game.

As the clich'e goes it was a game of two halves with the All-Stars having the better 1st half as they were well organised and direct hitting the back of the net twice with goals from Chris Bisson and Chris Fountain to take a half time lead 2.0

Referee Darren Rogers along with Physio, sports injury volunteer Roy Dunning were arguably the busiest of the day as Roy started by making sure all players were properly strapped up and comfertable to start the game and was a regular visitor on the pitch to assist with knocks that were down to miss timed  tackles and fatigue rather than malicious intent, and Darren with his whistle keeping a controlled flow to the game with the assists of lines men Justin Lunt

During the break the carlsberg lads showed their respect for each other and gave their verdict of events and planned approach for the second half with an additional input from Nigel Spink that spurred us on as we were by far the better team in the second period.

A forced substitution for the injured Ste Charnock at centre half was replaced by Billy Kinsey who's first taste of open aged football along with captain Mike Hartley, Justin Singleton, Bary Higham and goalkeeper Stu Brown snuffed out all the efforts of the All-Stars attacks. The midfield of Stu Williams, Byron Spink, Paul McCann and Craig Martin interchanging with Chris Maguire, Robin Sloane & Mark Evans feeding the forwards of Rob Whittaker, Chris Pete peppered the All-Stars and got their just rewards as good work with the ball coming from the right hand side found Byron Spink within the penalty area as his he hit his shot hard and low into the bottom of the net to make it 2.1.

As time was running out and the Carlsberg lads were pushing for an equaliser, the All-Stars conceded a corner with minutes left and as the ball was swung in, the ball was cleared and the All-Stars winger had it all to do as he ran half the pitch to slot the ball home and call an end to an epic game - Carlsberg 1 : 3 Soap All-Stars.

Man of the match was Byron Spink for Carlsberg & Ben Lever for the All-Stars with each presented with a case of San Miguel from Nigel Spink for their efforts.

During the refreshments provided by Carlsberg depot Stone cross, an auction was held for a pair of signed Nigel Spink goalkeeper gloves worn by himself during the match. Special thanks to Nigel for his support and availability for our fund raising event.
