Story

WHY

“Lets get a mountain bike” my friend said, “Sure why not” so we did a few rides in local forests, Dales, Moors etc, The rides steadily grew from a couple of hours to full days on the bike. The number of people also grew. And then it came to my turn to organise a ride out. For some crazy reason I chose a 230 mile Coast to Coast!!!

WHO

The C2C team consists of Craig Hopwood, Chris Broadhurst, Damien Morrison, Danny Stainton, Karl Nichols and Mark Thompson. We have a support crew of Keith Hughes who will take on the role of – Team Coach / Driver / Organiser / Masseuse (although he doenst know that until he reads this page) and more than likely, repair and maintenance.

All the members of the team are professional business men – Directors, Solicitors, Managers and none are elite athletes (although Karl likes to do long runs and daft things like that)

THE ROUTE

Starting at Southport we will be following the Trans Penine Trail www.transpenninetrail.org.uk which drops down to Liverpool, across to Manchester, over the Pennines, Barnsley, Doncaster, Selby, Goole, Hull, Hornsea and our finish point will be an extension of the route to Barmston (about another 10 miles) where hopefully there may be a beer or 2 waiting.

REASON

For Charity of course. My father Peter Hopwood passed away in August 2009 after a long fought battler with cancer. Since he retired from Nestle one of his many passions was being a Voluntary Trustee for St Leonards Hospice of which he devoted a lot of time and energy. The Hospice was also where dad spent his final hours being cared for before he passed away.

THE CHARITY

St Leonards Hospice is a registered charity caring of people with life-threatening illnesses - often, though not always, cancer. It is a purpose-built unit with 20 beds as well as people who have DayCare at the Hospice. The Hospice never makes a charge to patients or their families and relies almost entirely on donations and fundraising. Whilst my father had often talked passionately about the Hospice this was the first time I had experienced it first hand. I was really blown away by the care, compassion, commitment, dedication and professionalism shown by each and every member of staff. They affirm life and regard dying as a normal process, give relief from pain, and support patients in every possible way,

HOW MUCH

With running costs near £10000 per day I have set a “ambitious” target of one days costs (yes that’s £10000.00 whole English Pounds!!!!)  which, as a team we are hoping we can raise.
