Story
The TEA tanker, No 87867, was purchased from Coryton Oil Refinery in December 2015 and moved to Epping & Ongar Railway in April 2016. The original intention for this wagon was to purge (chemically clean) the inside of the tanker and use it as a water tank. The Epping & Ongar Railway committee has advised us that they are no longer going ahead with the use of the tanker as a water bowser and have requested the wagon to leave the site.
The haulier used to move the wagon has agreed to move it to Long Marston for the purging and then onward storage at a facility in the midlands. The bill for this will be around £2,950.
This wagon is a unique example of an experiment by British Rail in the 1980's when the bogies were changed to Y25C composition which means that each axle has a true weight bearing on 25 tonnes, instead of a shared weight over the two of 50 tonnes.
This is the largest capacity wagon that is in preservation, with a total loaded weight of 102.5 tonnes.
Please don't let this wagon fall foul of the scrapman. This is our last chance to keep this wagon as part of our history. The wagon will eventually find a home in a museum or local heritage railway
