    Story

The Association of Mixed Race Irish ('AMRI') was founded by Rosemary Adaser in order to raise awareness of issues concerning Irish people of mixed-race (e.g. Irish and African heritage, see updates and background below)

I am a Trustee at the charity 'Irish in Britain' which supports charities within the Irish community in the UK. I came across this new group through 'Irish in Britain'. It is a great privilege to work with AMRI to help them achieve their goals and get the support they need. I was born in Ireland of Irish and South African background and have a keen interest in helping this community where ever I can.

AMRI has been involved in several projects about raising awareness, such as the documentary produced by RTE ("The Search") last year and the Guardian's "Ireland's forgotten mixed race child abuse victims"(see below). The response to these from the Irish community has been overwhelmingly positive. AMRI also provides community support and networking events to help build self-confidence and self-esteem to deal with the effects of racism during childhood and to build community support.

The stories of this group have largely been hidden in the past. Many mixed-race children were left in Mother & Baby homes and industrial homes in the 1940s to 60's as a result of failure to find adoption opportunities.

AMRI is also working on a project relating to the Mother and Baby Homes investigation. This investigation is at a critical phase, with the Minister for Children in Ireland having recently asked interested parties for a series of meetings in Ireland to consider the Commission of Investigation's interim reports and possible health and well-being supports.

AMRI is appealing for funds of £5,500 for the important work needed on the Mother & Baby Homes Investigation project, it will involve organising and travelling to meetings(Gov & group), counselling/training and advocacy (below)

Please help me to raise donations for this worthy cause!

Here is some background information to this particular Project we are working on: Some years ago we campaigned and lobbied to get the government to look at racial abuse in the institutions as this was so damaging to many survivors and in the last investigation into Industrial schools (Ryan Report) many complained that this form of abuse was not properly addressed and acknowledged. .....continues.....

...continued: We were determined not to let this happen again and following the Institutional Racism found in the UK police service in the McPhearson Report, we pushed to have this looked at in the Mother and Baby homes investigation. We succeeded in getting a clause written into the law in Ireland for this particular investigation to examine racism against children in the institutions. ...continues....

..continued: This was an historical first for Ireland, to have discrimination on the basis of Race investigated by a Commission. As a consequence, the Commission is currently investigating how children of black African fathers were treated in the MBH institutions, this involves our group giving lots of emotional evidence to the panel of commissioners. Like being in court, evidence is given under oath. Continues....
