After being diagnosed with relapse remitting multiple sclerosis in Dec 14 life has definitely not been the same. Following an aggressive relapse this year when I was left unable to walk & move my right arm & leg I was hospitalised in the uk & decided I needed to do something. I did a lot of research & the drugs being offered to me in the UK "might" slow down the progression of this disabling condition but can't stop it, however the side effects are harsh: secondary auto immune diseases, kidney & liver damage, bleeding, thyroid problems....I decided that's not the road I want to take.

So, I went to San Diego & had a form of stem cell treatment. Stem cells were taken from my fat & re infused back into my body with the aim being to repair the damaged nerve costing (myelin) & give me function & mobility back. Well almost 4 weeks after the treatment I'm walking, my balance is back, I'm not slurring when I talk, my eye pain is reduced, muscle strength is back & the feeling in my hands is returning. The downside is I still have MS & this is a short term fix, the cells in my immune system will still randomly attack my brain & spinal cord leaving me with reduced mobility & function each time.

I've been researching a treatment called HSCT. In HSCT for MS, hematopoietic (blood cell-producing) stem cells, which are derived from a person's own (“autologous”) bone marrow or blood, are collected & stored, & the rest of the individual's immune cells are depleted by chemotherapy. Then the stored hematopoietic stem cells are reintroduced to the body. This treatment is showing great promise & hope, it stops the progression and relapses due to the new healthy immune system. This is not an option for me in the UK because the criteria states I have to have failed on the drugs! Mexico doesn't have that criteria. I'm on a waiting list to go for this life changing treatment.
