    Story

UPDATE! We have already raised £4,000 of our £20,000 target, through our previous crowd funding page. A huge thanks to EVERYONE who has donated so far.

Network Rail plan to "redevelop" the Brixton Railway Arches and evict over thirty tenants and traders in the process.

Network Rail are attempting to terminate all current leases. Their new proposed leases include a 300% rent increase and a "change of use" for various Arches. The new leases will make it impossible for tenants to remain at the Brixton Arches.

The planned redevelopment does not require the termination of leases. This is a choice that Network Rail make, in order to secure their desired 300% rent increases.

In the event that tenants attempt to legally challenge the evictions, Network Rail have officially stated that all discretionary compensation will be withdrawn and tenants will be denied a right to return to their arch. For this reason, the majority of tenants and traders have been bullied into surrendering their current leases.

However - despite Network Rail's threats - four tenants remain. These four tenants have bent over backwards in negotiations and have only made one request, that Network Rail does not terminate their leases. To date, Network Rail has refused this request and as such leave tenants with no option but to make preparations to begin a legal challenge to defend their leases/ businesses.

After having consulted with our solicitors - DMB Law - tenants feel that they have strong grounds on which to move forward with a legal challenge. Legal costs have been estimated to potentially total between £20,000 - £30,000. Tenants are making personal arrangements to cover the cost of legal fees, but are requesting your help.

In the event that Network Rail make the decision to allow these remaining four tenants to keep their leases, then tenants will not be going to court and all moneys raised via this campaign will be given to a local charity/s of the traders choice.
