Story
Sierra Leone has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. 1 in 17 women will die whilst pregnant, in labour or in the 6 weeks following birth. Almost all of these deaths are preventable.
Magda saw this for herself in the first few years of her career as a nurse and midwife in Sierra Leone and was heartbroken to see women turned away from hospitals because they could not pay for their care.
Since coming to the UK, Magda has worked tirelessly to save enough money to build a maternity hospital back home in Kenema, Sierra Leone that will serve every woman in the community where nobody will be turned away.
The building is now almost complete but medical equipment does not come cheap. Magda is trying to fundraise and get as much help as possible to get the hospital up and running to start saving the lives of women and children.

7 years agoHuge thanks to everyone who has already donated, £600 is amazing. Quick update. Magda is going out to the hospital in March. She has suggested that we use funds to buy some sonicaids and other equipment to be put to great use. Also, if anyone has any midwifery books that they would like to donate please get in touch, they would be really useful for teaching. I have arranged for Magda to share her story in the UCLH insight magazine so look out for her there! Magda will share some photos of the project when she gets back in March.
