Story

We are Houria, a Bristol-based community interest company (CIC) with a mission to provide safe employment, training and skills-sharing opportunities to women who are migrants and who are often survivors of slavery.

Maybe you've met us while catering at an event, eaten our delicious food, followed us on social media or spoken to one of our very talented Sisters or team members while out and about? Wherever you have heard about us, THANK YOU for taking the time to visit us here!

Houria - an Arabic word meaning Freedom - brings talented female migrant women into safe working environments, where they are paid fairly. Alongside this we provide a package of training and support to help level the playing field, so they have a fair opportunity to achieve their potential.

Many refugee women have survived situations of modern slavery, such as trafficking and domestic servitude. We understand that modern slavery is racialised and gendered. We actively centralise and elevate these women, our Sisters, in a safe and encouraging environment.

As a CIC we rely on grants, donations, corporate funding and one-off gifts (alongside profits we generate) to continue to operate our programmes, which exist to offer a hand-up to vulnerable women, when they need it most.

We are raising funds to help us deliver our training programme to 15 members of our Sisterhood in the coming months. The programme will help the women develop skills for employability in the catering and hospitality industry and will be delivered by our in-house training team in a variety of practical and classroom settings in Bristol.

We partner with other anti-slavery & anti-racism organisations whose values closely align with our own, to help push for change and true equality for vulnerable people in our community. Our social enterprise is grassroots, young and ambitious. We are proud to say that we kept our heads above water during the pandemic and continue to tread water through the current economic crisis by diversifying our offer and leveraging our networks and partners, such as Eastside Community Trust, who have been fantastic.

However, we do need your help right now; Can you make the gift of a donation to us today? Without the generous donations of our supporters we simply couldn't continue to make such a positive impact in our community, so a truly heartfelt "thank you" for all of the help we have received so far. We are so grateful.
