This summer I am looking to work together with Operation Wallacea (Opwall), which is a conservation research organisation that is funded by, and relies on, teams of student volunteers who join expeditions for the opportunity to work on real-world research programs alongside academic researchers. I have chosen to go to Mexico for a month and split my time between Forest and Marine sites.
In the first two weeks I'll be working in the Calakmul biosphere reserve - one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and a UNESCO world heritage site, famed for its huge expanse of undisturbed tropical rainforest.
In the final two weeks I will be in the small coastal town of Akumal where we will closely be monitoring 3 different species of turtle, and particularly monitoring sex ratios of turtle hatchlings since there are concerns that climate change is affecting the number of males being born.
This is a fantastic opportunity for me to contribute to the conservation of some of the world's most biodiversity rich areas. I will also be able to contribute to my education by getting hands on experience of research skills and assisting in real life research.
It's always been a dream to go to America and to also get an insight to a culture that is very different from my own.
