Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2017 to help raise funds so that CCMP can continue its vital and life changing work in this remote and extremely poor area of Northwestern Tanzania.
Having visited Kagera and volunteered there for over 15 years between us, we have seen the extreme poverty and recent famine caused by drought and failed harvests and this has inspired us to support this project.
CCMP is a community-focussed, self-help, asset-based approach to development:
- local workers are trained to enable communities to identify their needs
- the community works out what assets they already have to help meet those needs
- they work together to find achievable solutions
Examples of CCMP at work include:
- increasing agricultural production by composting, better weed control, improved seed varieties, better irrigation
- setting up savings schemes so that villagers can borrow money to start up new small businesses and achieve self-sufficiency
- growing more trees to protect the soil and prevent erosion and provide construction materials
- building large rainwater tanks to conserve scarce water
Dorothee and Judy are joining up with Thomas, the CCMP project leader, and Joni from Kagera to undertake this challenge and we are looking for sponsorship to help Thomas achieve his goal of taking CCMP training to every parish in Kagera Diocese.
The money raised will make a real difference to the people of these remote and poor communities. Please help.
Thank you, any donations will be hugely appreciated.

7 years agoI'm delighted to say that we have successfully climbed Kilimanjaro. It really was a once in a lifetime experience. Absolutely awesome but also gruelling. Especially the last push from basecamp just before midnight until we reached the summit at 06:15, perfect timing for sunrise. We gained about 1300m in the dark and having spent about 20 minutes on the summit at -17 degrees C, we had to get down to basecamp again, an hour's rest, some food, packing and another 4 hours of very steep and slippery descent. Only 3 days until JustGiving expires.
