Myself, my husband and our two daughters traveled to Kolkata last August to spend time working in remote villages across West Bengal alongside Big Life project. The needs were overwhelming, we saw hundreds of families unable to access basic healthcare. Seeing so many men, women and children living on streets and working for many hours in rice and jute fields in blistering heat, without the reward of a home to return to or enough food to eat. Seeing people unable to have there basic health needs met left us with a heavy heart. We worked long 14 hour days, able to clean wounds that were infected, bandage injuries, treat malaria and infections that required antibiotics. Yet we knew after we left the needs would remain.

In order to give hope and meet the needs in this area, a permanent base is needed. This is why we are trying to raise enough money to refurbish a disused building to become a health clinic. The aim being for local people to be trained and empowered to carry out basic health checks, wound cleaning, blood pressure monitoring, etc combined with a rotation of medical / nursing students and qualified professionals to breath life back into these people's lives.
