Weʼve raised £4,835 to hopefully, pay for private tests & treatment for a rare blood cancer PRIMARY POLYCTHEMIA VERA. Any cash not used by Matt will go to charity.

Funded on Thursday, 22nd December 2016

    Story

My nephew, Matthew Harrison, is a careworker and was, until this year, a fit and healthy young man.
He now has a rare form of blood cancer called PRIMARY POLYTHEMIA VERA which is affecting the rest of his body.
It's caused by a faulty gene:- JAK2 and symptoms usually come on slowly and affect the elderly. Matthews has come on very quickly and he suffers from almost all of the symptoms, the worst being the effect on his liver and bone-marrow.
Matthew has lost a lot of weight and is in constant pain.
He resisted all our offers of fundraising at first, saying that there are more deserving than he. He finally agreed to me setting up the page on the understanding that any ''left-over'' donations would go to other charities!
He may need a bone-marrow and liver transplant.......and these are only two of his complications. He also gets massive amounts of fluid in his stomach and badly swollen limbs.
NHS Bolton haven't been able to help him and he's now in St James at Leeds awaiting an operation.
I've promised to match every £1 donated - up to £2K - so we could raise £4,000 to pay for much needed private tests, in the hope that Matthew will finally get a full diagnosis/prognosis and then his treatment can begin.
.........and he's recently been diagnosed with BUDD-CHIARI SYNDROME too - summat else no-one has ever heard of😪😔

Our Matthew is back home! St James medical team are happy with the progress with his liver (the Budd-Chiari Syndrome) and will see him again in a month😊 He's found a specialist in POLYCYTHEMIA VERA - a London doctor who's own son has the condition. Matthews haematologist at Bolton needs to refer him - but the money we raised will pay for his consultation and any further tests that she may recommend. THANKYOU ALL AGAIN

Amazing support for a truly deserving lad. Why not google his two conditions for a better understanding? PRIMARY POLYTHEMIA VERA and BUDD-CHIARI SYNDROME. Let's keep the fundraising going - Matthew will donate, to charities, any money he doesn't use - and maybe some of it can go to support others with these life-threatening illnesses.

Matthews target well & truly smashed.THANK YOU EVERY ONE!! He had a lengthy op on Monday & early signs are that it's been successful in delaying the need for a liver transplant. Early days, fingers crossed (because the liver is just one part of his problems). The good news from this operation & the fantastic show of support from family, friends, neighbours & strangers, has raised his spirits - but the light is still feint at the end of a long tunnel. He has a a fantastic spirit of determination & deserves every chance. KEEP STRONG MATTY!!

I'm the elder sister of Darren, who has been Matthew's step father, for almost 20 years. I've been involved in fund-raising for many good causes over the years but none as personal or heartbreaking as this one. Matthew needs a chance at a full life. He has so much to give.
