East Leeds sadly has some of the highest poverty and deprivation levels in the UK. Each year a small community charity, Community Unity, based within the area, fund raises to share community, love and food via the means of Christmas hampers, to those struggling in the area. The hampers are full of goodies for either single people or families and aim to provide a hot meal and some Christmas treats over the festive period. Each hamper is made according to referrals from multi agencies, schools, elderly care services, social care and such the like, to ensure those in need are those who receive. They are indeed a real blessing of community cohesiveness and Christmas joy but each year are getting harder and harder to fund. In part because of food costs and in part because of demand.
This year I have set myself a challenge of "Walking 1000 miles" and rather than it be solely a self centered hedonistic challenge ( well that may be pushing it) I thought it would be far more beneficial to share the joy in more ways than one. The 1000 miles is actual walks, rather than steps and covers the span of the year. It equates to walking around 19 miles a week,so about 2.7 miles a day, every day, all weathers. I shall be logging my progress each day on Accupedo to start with, so walking evidence is available.
