    Story

Aim - To save land at Druridge Bay from being developed into a 3 million tonne opencast coal mine, which will disperse wildlife, pollute adjacent wildlife reserves and accelerate climate change.

Save Druridge are volunteers trying to prevent an opencast mine being excavated in Northumberland, beside one of the UK’s most beautiful, unspoilt beaches. Northumberland Council approved the plans, however the Sect. of State is to hold a Public Inquiry.
The UK government is to end the use of coal in energy production by 2025. All coal power stations will or have converted to fuel such as biomass. Coal is no longer a major source of power, falling from over 30% of the market to less than 5% currently. An opencast in Scotland owned by the mining company is being mothballed 3 years early as there’s no market for the coal.
The proposed opencast site is adjacent to wildlife ponds (one with SSSI status) managed by Northumbria Wildlife Trust. Wildlife is diverse: red squirrels, great crested newts, otters, 5,000+ pink footed geese, marsh harriers, avocets, little egrets. Due to blasting, noise and pollution, the wildlife will lose their habitat and feeding grounds will be contaminated. The sea is a Marine Conservation area that will be affected by water from the mine.
The bay area is a major tourist attraction for holiday-makers, bird-watchers, walkers, photographers etc. Without the mine, tourism will increase and far exceed permanently, the levels of temporary jobs from the mine.
The Public Inquiry is in June 2017, reporting late 2017.
We need to raise £30,000 - £40,000 for Barrister and Expert Witness fees, legal documents etc. We have raised over £3k through events attended by Bill Oddie, our MP and wildlife & climate change experts.
Please give to save the wildlife, their habitat and breeding grounds, our flourishing tourist industry and make our planet greener and less polluted. Any excess funds will go to wildlife charities to protect Druridge Bay wildlife.

They will make a mess of the recovery scheme anyway just like they did for us at Pegswood - a so-called lake that leaks and can't be used for anything. They had the nerve to ask to use it for landfill
