    Story

    Callie

Callie came into us on Monday 12th July, in a condition that I have never seen any cat in 23 years of working in a rescue industry. She is 10 months she was born on 24/9/20, she is only the size of a 14 week old kitten and was extremely emaciated, she weighed only 0.7kg, she was extremely dehydrated and was covered in fleas, she couldn’t even lift her head she was so weak and anemic, her gums were completely white and we really didn’t understand how she was still alive. She had a damaged paw, which we believe happened because of being stepped on as a kitten and it had broken and never been treated, it had healed at a 45 degree angle and she wasn’t able to put weight on it.

The first thing we did was bathe her to get rid of all the fleas, we were shocked at the amount of flea dirt coming off of her, 6 baths and still the water was pure red like blood pouring off of her. We then got some recovery food in to her then rushed her to the vets to be put on a drip. Our vet said she had never seen a case so severe and was completely shocked at the state Callie was in.

She was admitted for fluids she had to have them subcutaneous (under the skin) due to not being able to raise a vein. Our vet wasn’t sure she would make the night, the Clay County Cat Care team decided to give her the chance and Leanne took on the responsibility of keeping her alive, Leanne stayed up all night ensuring she was fed recovery food by syringe as she wasn’t able to eat on her own. She was fed 15ml every hour throughout the night and was cuddled up on Leannes bed with her watching the television. She had the fighting spirit so we kept going. For the next few days Leanne continued to feed her hourly 24/7 and we started to noticed an improvement. The first 2 days she just slept but the 3rd day she had the strength to get up and walk a little. She was posted on our Facebook page and has a massive following and we update daily. Day 4 she used the litter tray and started eating smoked salmon which Leanne had brought her. She also enjoyed time on the beach. We had never seen her look so relaxed and happy. This made us want to fight for her even more. She was weighed again on day 5 and had gained 90g, on Day 6 she started eating on her own and has a love for Felix doubly delicious. Today Day 8 we have weighed her and she has gained 150g, Callie has been neglected so badly by her previous owners and they had a duty of care which they never gave her. We are now fundraising so we can take Callie to see a specialist vet to see if we can save her front broken paw or if it’s too badly damaged and will need amputating, we never give up on a cat at Clay County Cat Care and we believe every animal deserves a chance. Please can you help us by donating and sharing

Callie’s story so we can spread the word far and wide.

Callie had a trip back on the train from her vets appointment this evening after my car decided to breakdown. She was seen by Matt from Cornish Paws, sadly it wasn’t the news we were hoping for, she will need to go and have a number of tests and X-rays as soon as possible to assess all her limps which all seem to be affected and not just her front right. Her results will then be sent to a specialist to see if there is anything we can do to give her a quality of life, we have had to increase the amount we initially wanted due to this.
