Story
I'm Sarah, a 4th year medical student at UEA, and this summer both I and my friend Hayley will be setting out on a journey to Malawi to do four weeks of work placement where we will be taking part in clinics in rural Malawi.
During the four weeks, Hayley and I will work with the World Medical Fund in Malawi, at an established base that has had an essential role in providing healthcare to local rural communities for the past thirteen years. A day at the clinic would involve treating up to two hundred and fifty people, mostly children, and providing vital support in the form of medical advice and interventions such as antibiotics, malaria treatments and more. Hayley and I will have a crucial role in the functioning of the clinic, but we will not be left without support—a clinical team that is already resident in the area will be helping us with making our clinical decisions and in communicating with our patients, who will mostly not speak English. As many of our patients will have walked for miles just to access the clinics, we will stay at the clinic for as long as it takes each day until there are no more people left to see.
This page is primarily for donations to help me cover the costs of this trip, from plane fares to accommodation and food, and I am setting it up in the form of a sponsorship page for me running the Norwich Half-Marathon. I have never run such a distance, and am hoping that by taking up this challenge for myself I can help to amass support and funding to help me take part in this extremely important WMF project.
Any money made over the target will go either directly to the World Medical Fund as a donation for their project in Malawi, or into purchasing donations here in the UK to take with us to Malawi. (Things the WMF may have requested, or things the school near our accommodation might request, such as stationary/toys etc...)
