Story
5 year old Liam was diagnosed with Burkett’s leukaemia on December the 16th, just 15 days after his birthday. So far he’s managed one night at home since then. Most of his time has been spent at Birmingham’s children hospital where he started his chemo; unfortunately the first lot of chemo didn’t work as he relapsed pretty soon into it. This dropped his chance of getting the all clear from a 80% chance to a small 10%. They started him on a new chemo which although seemed to be working caused complications in its self. Liam ended up with encephalitis and is now suffering with what we hope isn’t permanent brain damage. He has now been given the all clear from the Leukaemia but as he hasn’t finished the course he could still relapse (fingers crossed he doesn’t). He’s currently still in hospital although is well enough to go home, this brings me to the reason we've set this page up.
Due to the issues Liam’s encountered he is now unable to move much and has lost all speaking ability. This is improving very gradually though. In order to get Liam home the house needs adaptation due to Liam currently in a wheel chair. He also will need physio and speech therapy almost daily. He really is a fighter and has come across more problems than any child should have to. The aim is to raise as much money as possible to keep the family together as Liam's needs are currently so great and specific that both parents need to be with him to offer care.

7 years agoLiam continues to do well. He's more smiley and laughing a lot, more alert and engaging in more activities. Liam received a new spinal jacket yesterday. We're hoping that he tolerates this & that it helps with both his head control and trunk support. He's due to be discharged at the end of October so there is a lot of planning going on at the moment to ensure all support, therapy and equipment required for Liam coming home is in place. Liam still has a very long way to go but it will be amazing to have the four of us at home after so long.

7 years agoOnce home the level of therapy available to Liam will not be sufficient for his needs. We are therefore looking at private physiotherapy and speech and language therapy. We really appreciate all the support received so far & would be so grateful for any contributions to help towards the cost of providing the therapy that Liam needs to help with his recovery.
