    Story

Everwitch Theatre needs to raise £5434 to help the last remaining York Normandy Veterans see their verbatim play, ‘Bomb Happy’, tour, as a professional production, during their lifetime- time critically this year.

The Veterans will attend each of the six Yorkshire tour venues this Autumn to meet audiences in a unique & special post show event- Meet the Veterans.

The idea for a verbatim play about the real-life experiences of five of Yorkshire’s Normandy Veterans came about through concern by the remaining members, now in their nineties, that their experiences of D-Day and battles to liberate Europe from occupation could well die with them. They were particularly concerned that, as a nation, in years to come we may forget their young comrades who never returned from France, whom they remember on 6th June each year without fail when they re-visit the beaches and battlefields.

“I haven’t seen anybody dead before and we’re in the water wading to the shore and we’re literally brushing against…. bodies rolling in the surf - people that we know…eighteen, nineteen year olds –they’re people that we know!" (extract from the script)

Everwitch Theatre have interviewed & recorded the memories of these five exceptional men (sadly one Veteran has since passed away ) to create a play that tells each young soldier’s unique story in their own words, highlighting the lifelong impact of conflict trauma on these incredible men.

    Funds raised will cover:

Travel to & from 6 Yorkshire venues for the Veterans & actors
Production costs - actor fees, a specially commissioned soundtrack, technical costs, costume (battledress) & props.
Marketing & publicity: design & print of 2650 flyers & posters to promote the tour.

Audience Written Feedback (2016 rehearsed readings of ‘Bomb Happy’)
“Evocative and involving-superb!” “Thoughtful, meaningful script with a beautiful message" “A brilliant & moving insight.'' " A poignant and moving legacy to real- life war heroes."

Thank you so much to everyone who supported our fundraising event this weekend - we raised £360 and so have been able to reduce our target for this page accordingly! Thanks so much to everyone who couldn't make it but who donated here on our JustGiving page. We are nearly there everybody! Here's a photo of our the one and only Cookey, here sharing a joke with honorary Normandy Veteran Daphne Doran (whose words also feature in our play through the character of a Normandy Veteran's wife) & Jenny Rowley who made lovely cakes for our fundraiser!

The York Normandy Veterans were the special guests at the conference Bringing Conflict Home which I co-organised. Meeting them and hearing from them about their experiences was very moving.
