    Story

Trade is a new play from Zen Gun Theatre. We're bringing the show to ARC Stockton in April 2017 and need to raise some extra cash to help us do this. We reckon you probably have plenty of stuff in your life, so rather than offering bits and bobs, 20% of anything you give will be donated to Dalit Freedom Network UK, a charity working with women in India.

Trade is a cross-cultural, bilingual piece in Hindi and English that considers issues surrounding modern day slavery through the lens of one, microcosmic experience. It’s sad, funny, hopeful and as complex as the situation it aims to dissect. It raises questions about the ways in which we live and how even the smallest life is complicit, through present and historic actions, in the state of the World.

The show is a multi-media, immersive experience that follows Alice, an English woman suffering from depression who comes to find solace, strength and perspective through encounters with the spirit of Ashamma, a twelve year old Jogini, from Karnataka, rural India.

The word 'Jogini' is one of several given to a form of ritual sex slavery or temple prostitution across southern India. The most widely known name is 'Devadasi' which means 'servant of the gods'.

We're applying to Arts Council England for funding, but we also need some match funding to help us realise our vision for Trade.

With £45 to go we've almost reached our target. Thanks so much everyone. We're feeling the love this Valentine's Day. 20% of everything we raise will go to Dalit Freedom Network, working to prevent the trafficking and enslavement of women and children from Dalit, tribal and other poor and marginalised communities in India.
