Elective Placement in Ghana
In July 2018 I will be travelling to Takoradi, Ghana with five other amazing student midwives for a two week placement providing maternity services to women less fortunate than us here in the UK.

Story
I am currently a second year student Midwife at the University of Bradford. For my elective midwifery placement I have been given the amazing opportunity to travel to Takoradi, Ghana for two weeks to volunteer my own time, knowledge and experience to provide women with a positive birth experience and the antenatal and postnatal care that they deserve.
In order to achieve my goal I need your help to raise £1,500 to cover fees such as accomodation, travel costs, visa costs and the supplies I will be taking with me to donate.
I will be taking personal spending money and any social activities will be paid for by myself.
Two years ago I embarked on the journey of becoming a midwife, something that has been a lifelong dream of mine. I have made many sacrifices over the last two years but have worked hard to ensure my dream comes to fruition.
I jumped at the opportunity to travel to Ghana, I have been fortunate to provide care to many women whilst on placement here in the UK and have been lucky to train in an area which is extremely diverse. This has given me an insight into the barriers and interventions that form the basis of maternity care.
My placement in Ghana will provide me with further knowledge and experience of the challenges women face when accessing maternity care and therefore enhance my knowledge and further inform my future practice as a midwife. I will gain an insight in how maternity care is provided with limited resources and will be able to provide women with the care that they deserve.
Work the World
The placement I am embarking on will be arranged through an experienced elective placement company: Work the World.
Heading overseas for a midwifery elective placement is a once in a lifetime opportunity. In diverse clinical settings I will see how local staff cope with a lack of resources when dealing with things like high birth volumes and labour complications.
Work the World have been tailoring midwifery placements for over a decade. The partnerships they have developed with hospitals around the world provide access to experiences that would otherwise be impossible.
The Future
This elective placement will be highly beneficial not only for me but the women I will provide care to whilst I am there.
The experiences I have whilst there will greatly impact and influence my future practice enabling me to become the best midwife I can be.
I feel honoured and extremely privileged to have the opportunity to embark on this trip and any contributions you may be able to give will be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou!!
