    Story

Currently, 1/3 of Fijian children from rural communities live in poverty. Following a cyclone in 2016, over 200 schools were severely damaged or destroyed, yet even those that remain have so little money that they cannot provide any sporting equipment or support materials that we would consider fundamental. This combined with the deficit of teaching staff means that the level of education is severely compromised. As a result of this, fewer children attend school and this lack of education results in the continuation of poverty.

This summer, I will be working with a small, non-profit organisation who have dedicated the last 10 years to building a relationship with a rural Fijian community in order to improve attendance at the local school via the promotion of physical education, extracurricular and academic activities and so far, have had an outstanding impact. Throughout the years the projects have been running, the attendance of the pupils has increased significantly and I hope this will remain the pattern after our project finishes.

Sport has long been a passion of mine having been lucky enough to grow up with access to a multitude of clubs or facilities and I therefore find it all the more tragic that so many Fijian children do not have access as well. I can't wait to share my love of sport with the children who I know will be so appreciative and grateful. Not even the prospect of taking bucket showers can deter me!

Throughout the next few months, I will be working towards raising £2,500 which goes towards providing sports equipment and provisions to these schools as well as towards supporting the wider community. Therefore, any donation made has a first-hand impact on the lives of many.

I hope you can see the importance of this project as much as I can and would be kind enough to make a donation. I am so appreciative of anything given and thank you for even taking the time to read about this project!

    Thank you very much

    Amelia
