    Story

I am raising money to help me fund my Elective placement in summer, to Arusha, Tanzania. As part of the final year of my Midwifery degree, the opportunity to undertake an Elective placement is potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity, which will give me invaluable exposure to global midwifery practice.
I am passionate about continuous learning and development for midwifery, as I see it as key to enabling us to provide women and their babies with the best care. I believe seeing the global world of midwifery and the cultural, social and economic impacts on maternity care to be vital in the holistic provision of individualised care for our women. I feel this experience will not only change and improve my practice as a midwife, but also give me grounding to influence others’, hopefully making small steps to improve practice within the UK, as well as globally.

I will have the chance to experience and be part of a completely different culture to that of Western Society, allowing me to see first-hand the challenges Tanzanian midwives are faced with as well as being able to witness how this influences women’s experiences of pregnancy, labour and delivery.
I have chosen to undertake my placement within an Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit in Arusha, a small city within Tanzania. Providing me with the eye opening experiences of maternity care in East Africa, an area of low resources and a high birth rate of 39 per 1000 people, compared to the UK’s 12 per 1000 people.

My passion for improving care for mothers and their babies is the driving force behind my wanting to undertake an elective, as it will broaden my perspective of midwifery care and enable me to return to the UK and begin my practice as a newly qualified midwife on the right path.

Any donations big or small would be amazing!
