    Story

The Befrienders Charity is a small, local charity based in East Dunbartonshire. Their aim is to help people in the community, (mainly elderly people), who suffer from social isolation as a result of having little family and friends around them. The charity offer training to anyone aged 18 or over who is willing to volunteer to become a Befriender. So far, these outstanding volunteers have really had a positive impact on the lives of the service users by doing small things, such as paying them a weekly visit, taking them out for coffee and contacting them over the phone. Back in 2016, the four of us met the Befriending Team for the first time and we were all totally overwhelmed by the amazing work they do for the people within the community with such little money and resources. After hearing some of the touching stories that the team were willing to share with us, we decided that we must do something to help. In 2016, we won £3000 for this charity through a project called YPI. This money allowed the charity to host their annual “Christmas in February” event allowing the service users and volunteers to come together. We went along and it was a great day. However, we have decided that this just isn’t enough as the Befrienders Charity means a lot to us and we have created a truly special bond with the staff who devote their time and effort into helping people in need by running the Befriending service. We would really like to continue to give to this fantastic charity. The four of us have decided to climb Ben Lomond on the weekend beginning the 22nd of July. The Befriending Team are on such a low budget and are unable to do all that they wish to help the service users as much as they possibly can. In order to benefit the charity, we are kindly asking for any donations. They would be most appreciated and most welcome and would really help improve the lives of the socially isolated people within our community. Please help make a positive difference to someone’s life.
