Story
***DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR BEN NEV THE WALK WILL NOW BE SHARP EDGE IN THE LAKES***
https://www.walkingenglishman.com/lakes03.html
July the 28th. Two Barnsley Football Club fans (Jason & Joe) are climbing Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg Arete route (Aka 'The hard way)
Their aim is to raise money for the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign. The Campaign is strictly non-party political and is asking the Home Secretary to set up an independent public inquiry into the policing at Orgreave on 18th June 1984 This was during the year-long Miners' Strike of 1984/85.
On that day, striking miners picketed the Coking plant at Orgreave. Police on horseback and on foot charged into the pickets, attacking them with long batons and truncheons. Many of the pickets were badly injured, with wounds to the back of the head, during these violent assaults by the police. 95 were arrested and charged with riot or unlawfully assembly. They faced potential life sentences in jail.
In court, the trial collapsed, but no police officers were ever investigated or prosecuted for assault, wrongfully arrest, or lying in the evidence they gave. There was also no investigation into the tactics and methods used by officers on the ground, or senior officers on the day. Five years later, South Yorkshire Police paid out nearly £500,000 in total to 39 of the miners, without admitting to doing anything wrong.
Many of the miners have been left with ongoing physical and psychological problems, and many lost their jobs. What happened at Orgreave led to a breakdown in trust in the police, and this continues to this day. The same police force was involved in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. The Orgreave Campaign praises the Hillsborough campaigners, for what they have achieved in their long fight for the truth to come out.
The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, by asking for police and government records from the time to be made public, is fighting for justice for the miners and their families. Sadly, some of the miners have died during the 34 years since events at Orgreave, so never saw justice. We need to find out the truth before it is too late for others. The previous Home Secretary and the government refuse to release the records: some police records from the time will not be made public until 2066. By then, it will be too late.
Help us to carry on with our campaign for truth and justice, by supporting Jason and Joe. Jason and Joe have ex-miners in their families, and coming from Barnsley they wanted, 'To get involved and give something back to those who struggled and continue to struggle for our communities.'

6 years agoDue to weather conditions for Ben Nevis (Which could potentially halt our walk up the desired route which is a big risk with the driving distance) We've now decided to move mountains so to speak... We'll now be doing either Scarfell Pike or Blencathra and Sharp Edge in the Lakes. These are still very challenging routes (Have a google and see the images and such) We'll provide updates on the day, including links to photos and any videos we take! Thanks for all your support.
