Story
Who are we?
BHC Housing is an independent community-owned organisation in Brighton and Hove, owned by its local membership. As a Community Interest Company, our assets are protected by law for the benefit of the community we serve.
What is our mission?
We seek to acquire local housing to help address the housing crisis, which continues to worsen, as it has done for the past 4 decades.
Thousands of local workers and families are paying more than 50% of their income as rent, pushing many people into poverty. At the increasingly common extreme, many are forced to pay more rent than their full-time job earns, just to remain in their neighbourhood, or to keep from changing their childrens' schools.
Properties will be provided to local workers and residents who earn below the local average wage. Rents will be linked to income and will be affordable for workers earning the minimum wage.
Rent subsidies will drop as tenants will have lower rents. With security of tenure, this will encourage increased economic particpation, such as new businesses or education. Residents will also be able to develop greater roots, increasing community cohesion and resilience.
What about the properties?
Our very first crowdfunding goal is £700,000. With this and future fundraising, we will ensure we provide a mix of houses and flats that range from 1 to 4 bedrooms.
All homes will be upgraded to higher ecological standards, prioritising reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.
Updates and viewings?
Photographs and project information will be made readily available, and will also be included in our email newsletter.
As an incentive, we are offering viewiengs of our properties. 1st viewing after purchase, before renovations and upgrades. 2nd after works, before tenants move in.
a) £500 - 1 viewing before tenancy
b) £1,000 - 1 property after purchase, before tenancy
c) £2,000 - 2 properties, after purchase, before tenancy
d) £5,000 - 5 properties, after purchase, before tenancy
Please feel free to ask any questions. You can find more information at https://www.bhchousing.org.uk.
