Story
This page has been set up by Duncan’s daughters, Natalie and Nicola, to raise money for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Ward 23.
You may know my dad as ‘Big Dunc’ the window cleaner, proud owner of ‘Reliable Reflections’ who lived in Telford, Oakengates. Dad was also known for spontaneously travelling in his motorhome to enjoy many adventures surfing the Cornish coast. In addition to that, he was a proud and loyal Shrewsbury Town Football Club supporter. Some may know Dad through playing for Shifnal Football Club back in the day, too. Whichever way you have come to know my Dad, I’m sure you would agree that he was a lovely, thoughtful and hardworking person who enjoyed life. Dad appreciated his friends, family and adored his grandchildren.
Unfortunately, on 31 October 2017, Dad was diagnosed with Acute Monocytic Leukemia. Dad was initially treated and cared for whilst spending 6 months in isolation at Ward 23 of Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Dad's wishes were to raise money for Ward 23 due to the outstanding care he received from all staff, doctors, nurses, cleaners, indeed everyone he grew to be very fond of for keeping his spirits up and making him smile in his time of need. They all showed that human touch and personal interest, and Dad really held Ward 23 in high esteem and very close to his heart.
Dad then got transferred to Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a stem cell transplant in January 2018, which was succesful and the future looked positive.
Sadly, we had the news in May 2019 Dad had relapsed and the cancer had returned. Faced with the news of terminal cancer, Dad showed determination and a positive spirit Dad and decided to undergo palliative radiotherapy to prolong his time left so he could spend as much time as possible with his family.
On 6 November 2019, Dad received the news that the cancer had spread and was extremely aggressive, with a prognosis of 'days to weeks.' Dad lost his battle to Leukaemia on Monday 2nd December 2019 at 5:17 pm.
We want everyone that knew and loved Dad that up until Dad passed away, he was the ‘Big Dunc’ everyone knew and loved, retaining a sense of humour to the end. Dad enjoyed living every day to the full, he saw the importance of family, friends & life.

Ward 23 of Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was where it all began for Dad. Their support and care will forever remain in the hearts of the family. They do a fantastic job and so we would like to raise money for equipment for them so they can keep providing such an amazing service to those that need them most.
