THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES
School libraries are a hugely important part in our education system, not only impacting on reading and writing skills but also wider learning skills as well as those in history, mathematics and science.
The school library can be about many things - it can promote and support leisure time reading, contribute to the social development of the students in the school. Importantly, the library can be a learning resource centre to support all the modes of teaching and learning in the school.
School libraries have also been found to have an impact on pupils' reading enjoyment, reading behaviour and attitudes towards reading. Motivation and attitudes in particular have been connected to library use.
Recent research has shown that fewer than half of children and young people read outside their class and standards of literacy in England are behind many other countries and recent budget cuts could possibly be affecting the effectiveness of school libraries.
This is why we have started the hashtag on social media #books4schools, as the quote at the top of the page states; small things, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.
