Story
We're a team of University of Bradford students from Peace Studies and International Development, supported by School of Health, that is enthusiastic about promoting the Sustainable Development Goals 6 which is to achieve access to Water and Sanitation for all.
Problem:
1 in 3 people (2.4 billion) worldwide do not have access to basic sanitation
Consequences:
Some 900 children die every day of diseases linked to contaminated water and unsafe toilets. (e.g. Diarrhea, Chronic malnutrition/ stunting, Cholera, Typhoid, Hepatitis, intestinal worms...)
Girls miss school due to lack of sanitation facilities
sexual violence against women and girls using the open as toilet
danger through poisonous animals and landmines
Lack of safe sanitation means people are risking their health and endure fear, vulnerability, shame and frustration on a daily basis - possibly multiple times.
Solution:
provide toilet solutions that contain pathogens in a socially responsible and context appropriate way
Our contribution:
Donate to 'Toilet Twinning'. Through that organization we can twin toilets on UoB campus with toilets that are to be constructed in a country where basic sanitation is an issue. The organization works in many African countries (Uganda, Zimbabwe, DRC, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Liberia...), but also in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Guatemala. Every £60 raised provides a safe household latrine to a vulnerable family, £240 could cover for a school toilet block.
Support 'Wish for Wash', an Atlanta based organisation that got initiated out of a student innovative engineering competition - a latrine was designed according to "culturally specific research and empathetic design". Not only does this organisation work in countries where basic sanitation is an issue but it also is engaged in refugee communities where temporary safe sanitation is crucial to ensure basic human safety.
The money donated to this page will be split between the organisations Any contribution would be tremendously appreciated and it would help in providing health and dignity to some of the most vulnerable.
