    Story

My name is Brian Chambers and I am 62 years old.

I have been incarcerated in a Turkish prison for 23 months.I am the only English person in the whole prison. Hardly anybody speaks any English meaning that, for the majority of the time, I am alone. This is seriously affecting both my mental and physical health.

With every conviction there is a fine. In my case it amounts to 20 Lira a day until 13 October 2017.or approximately 4000 Turkish Lira. I am then released and must purchase my flight to the UK. I then have to produce evidence of this to the local British Consul who, at a cost of £100, will issue the appropriate travel document to enable me to return to the UK.

In this country you can be guilty of breaking the law without realising it due to the totally alien culture, mind-set and legal system. It is illegal for a foreigner to work without a work permit, although you do not realise this initially. It is also illegal to tap somebody on the shoulder to draw a prospective landlord’s attention to something IF she happens to be a Muslim. Apparently, if you are an infidel it besmirches her honour. In my case I was taken to a court where nobody spoke English and a male witness miraculously appeared to “prove” the case and thereby defend her honour, although nobody else was present at the time. Under Turkish law SOMEBODY has to be held to account for a “crime” no matter whether they are guilty or not.

In another case in which I became unwittingly involved, the court proceedings were again in Turkish with me again being unable to understand what was being said or being able to defend myself. This dragged on for several years resulting in my imprisonment in April 2015.

Upon my return I must prove that I am entitled to Jobseeker's Allowance and Housing Benefit after an absence of 10 years.Meanwhile I need to rent a property at my own expense.I also plan to start my own business.

I believe that £3000 is a realistic estimate of my requirements.
