    Story

Thank you everyone who supported me, this is what happened:-

April finally came and I excitedly boarded our coach ready to travel to Belgium. All 24 Guides were ready for an adventure!

Many hours later we arrived in De Kluis, our home for the next few days, starving hungry we tucked into delicious food and collapsed into comfy beds. The next morning we woke up early, wearing our old clothes we got straight to work. Our project was to help complete an unfinished road way and steps to the community area to allow easy access for everyone who uses it. It was very hard work, we had to dig out rocks, fill trailers with soil and lay new gravel.
We all were extremely pleased with the finished job and happy it was going to make access easier! All of us worked as a team, in fact that made it easier!!

Flanders Field was the destination the following day. This was a moving place, I learnt a lot at the museum and wandered through the trenches getting a real feel of how it was in the war. I was shocked to see the many graves. We attended the daily ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres and laid down a Poppy wreath we made at the pre-camp. Finally listening to The Last Post at 8pm. In 1928 a number of citizens of the village decided they wanted to express gratitude for those who lost their lives for our freedom and independence , this ceremony is a daily event, it made us all think.
Our time was fast approaching the return journey home. The hours I spent with all the other Guides bonded new friendships and there were lots of tears on the train home.
This experience was so exciting, gave me confidence and taught me a lot.
I want to thank you for your support and encouragement to venture abroad with the Girl Guides, I have learnt skills, made memories and friendships that will stay with me forever. THANK YOU!

Six weeks to go! I just wanted to update you all on what I have been doing in preparation of my Girl Guide Community Experience in Belgium, I have returned tonight after a weekend getting to know everyone who’s going. We arrived Friday evening at a Scout Hut & all joined in to cook a meal, the next day we worked as a group cleaning, gardening & tidying the community centre. It looked fab!! We also made touch cushions for dementia sufferers. We talked lots about the trip, it made me feel confident and happy!! Thank you for supporting me!!

Good luck with your visit to Belgium Chloe. We have just returned having placed a memorial on my Grandfathers grave. He was killed in action in WWI. Best wishes Anita and Alan xxx
