Story
Every One Remembered – Chitterne 100
For over 100 years a stunning horse chestnut tree has grown proudly at the heart of our Salisbury Plain Village. Originally planted in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the tree stands on The Green in front of the Village Hall (previously the School). The villagers who departed for WW1 would have known The Green and this tree well.
Sadly in 2014 a large branch fell from its ageing structure and by 2015, in an attempt to save it, the tree was pollarded. Throughout 2016 and 2017, little new growth appeared.
To mark the WW1 Armistice Centenary on 11th November 2018, the Chitterne 100 Tree Project will host a Village Lunch, culminating in the planting of a replacement tree, to bring new life to The Green, and the installation of a circular bench around it, to allow present day and future villagers and passers-by the opportunity to sit for a moment and reflect on that lost generation that enabled the surviving generations to thrive then, now and for the next 100 years.

6 years agoA huge thank you to the Polden family...your support for the Chitterne 100 Tree Project reminded me of this photograph that hangs in my hall across the road from where it was taken over 100 years ago.. It shows the team of farriers and soldiers shoeing WW1 mules on Polden's Yard at Flint House...

What a wonderful gesture. Are you putting a plaque somewhere, so that in another 100 year’s, people will know what it was all for?
