Story
Hi Everyone,
I am a 2nd Year student midwife completing my Midwifery BSc (Hons) degree at Birmingham City University. During my second year, I have been given an opportunity to undertake an elective placement in the Summer of July 2017. Working along side 'Work the World', the destination I have chosen to explore is Dar Es Salaam, the second largest city in Tanzania, Africa.
Practicing midwifery here, would see me assisting in complicated surgical births and having an opportunity to work in both a government tertiary referral hospital and a local hospital. The practices adopted by the Tanzanian Midwives are dramatically different to the way we do things in the UK. Tanzania is one of the worlds poorest countries in the world, with only half the deliveries attended by a skilled professional. Around 800 babies in every 100,000 die.
Tanzania also has one of the highest maternal mortality rates with 546 out of 100,000 dying. That is 201,000 deaths a year! Some causes of these deaths include: Postpartum Haemorrhages, Pre-eclampsia, infections and unsafe abortions. All of which I cover on the second year of my degree. This would help give me such an invaluable experience which would be life-changing and have an impact on my practice as a student midwife.
The trip costs around £2,700 in total. Every small donation would be highly appreciated. The money would go towards funding my experience and would include: accommodation, visa, flights, hospital placements and my vaccinations. This is a very dawting experience for me, but I cannot wait to have an impact on the women and babies in Tanzania and provide them the care in which they deserve.
This experience will be life-changing and eye-opening and any donation (No matter how little) would help me achieve the invaluable skills that would help me develop as a person and a student midwife.
Thank you for reading my page.
All my love,
Chloe
