Story
A report in 2011 identified a need to replace the oak shingles on the spire within 5 years. Unfortunately, as all the Church Council's efforts were involved in raising money for the installation of the toilet and kitchen, work was not progressed on the spire.
A further report carried out in 2016 has again stressed the urgent need to replace the shingles, some of which are loose and a few have fallen onto the tower. Additionally, roof and gutter leaks are causing damage to the plasterwork within the church.
If these urgent repairs are not done before the coming winter, there is a risk that there will be further damage to the interior and exterior of the building.
Further deterioration will bring with it a risk that the church may have to close on health and safety grounds.
Quotes for work to repair the spire and leaks amount to £58,656 including VAT. The work involves the complete removal of the existing shingles. The underlying structure is to be inspected and repaired, then treated with wood preservative. New oak shingles are to be installed, with the addition of lead soakers. The base of the spire has to be re-leaded on underlay. Two slate roof valleys need to be re- leaded and damaged cast iron rainwater goods need replacing.
It is expected that the repairs will take between four and five weeks to complete and hopefully the work will commence in the autumn of 2017.

Shaw, United Kingdom
A Chapel was built in Shaw in 1837. In 1905 the church was remodelled by the architect C.E.Ponting and is considered to be his finest work. The stone exterior of the church has a tower in four stages including a porch and baptistry. The slender spire is covered in Oak shingles.
