Story
As you can see, Poom, my Brother-in-law appears to wasting. Over 6 months of lying in bed, unable to exercise his muscles is taking its toll. The strain is also taking its toll on his family. The picture shows his wife as she cares for him. He continues to require constant care for every single aspect of life. This appeal is about to close. If you intended to donate, please do so now as we are about to credit the collected amount to the account of his wife so that she can use to help them. Thank you so much. Here is my original statement. My Brother-in-law 'Poom' in Thailand had a major accident as he returned home from taking his wife to hospital. In 2016 she'd had a small stroke & in January this year she needed surgery to remove cataracts. Poom was on his way home to care for their young Grandson. He was not to arrive - instead, he was taken to hospital himself in a 'life-or-death' situation.
His skull was severely broken and he suffered major burns. Surgical treatment was excellent in the hospital but most of the nursing care had to be undertaken by family, who were instructed by the staff on feeding him through tubes, attending the oxygen supply, cleaning him etc. The area of his skull that was 'smashed' was removed and a flexible membrane inserted. This allowed that area of his brain to swell without impinging on the skull. Further operations followed, including skin grafts.
During our time in Thailand he made some progress physically but the most worrying aspect was and still is his lack of apparent brain activity. We encouraged family members to talk to him in the hope that somewhere deep within his mind he could hear and recognise those who were speaking and what they were saying. We hope that the day will come when he will be able to tell them he was aware we were all there and what we said!
The doctors said that he needed an air-pump type mattress in order to aid his blood circulation and help prevent bed sores but that unfortunately, they didn't have one available. We searched the internet and were able to purchase one for him and it is proving very helpful.
His was virtually the sole household income so they are quite desperate - there are no state benefits as in Western countries. We have done our best but any financial support would be hugely beneficial and appreciated. The hospital provided a bed in his home but now all his care is by the family.
Would you please consider a donation? The family have not asked for help, we are asking on their behalf!

7 years agoI extended this appeal as we have not yet reached the target we are hoping for. Since I last updated this page, my brother-in-law Poom has been in and out of hospital a few times, when he has suffered an infection. He is finally able to breathe without an oxygen cylinder, although this might be due to it being the rainy season in Thailand and the air is fresher. The opening created in his throat is being maintained as this is used to clear congestion with a suction tube. There's just about a month left and then the funds will be forwarded.

7 years agoWe have learned today that the local hospital will/can no longer provide the oxygen cylinder needed every two days, without charging the equivalent of £5. On top of that is the cost of transporting the empty one to the hospital & the full cylinder home. This is a terrible, additional financial burden.

7 years agoI would like to thank most sincerely those friends who have donated to start off this fund raising. My bother-in-law has to have 'round the clock' care - it takes two to move him - and no professional assistance is available to them, other than contact with a nurse for over-the-phone advice. If one of us in a Western country were in Poom's situation we would most certainly still be cared for in hospital. Not only is his immediate family doing for him what medical staff would be doing for one of us, they have also lost their 'bread-winner'

It has not been an easy decision to create this appeal because it is to assist a family member. However, several people who want to help have strongly urged me to do so and I thank them for this encouragement
