Story
Carlisle Residents Against Incinerator (CRAIN) have been fighting on your behalf since 2016 to prevent the building of a huge energy-from-waste incinerator at Kingmoor, but now we need your help. The incinerator will worsen local air pollution and exacerbate the climate crisis we all face. The UK already has enough incineration capacity. The developer was originally going to use a technology that they said was "inherently cleaner" and "more efficient" - but not any longer! Now they plan to build an older moving-grate incinerator. Say NO! to the harmful pollution. Help stop this incinerator that is expected to bring waste long distances to be burnt in Carlisle.
Carlisle City Council have voted unanimously to oppose the incinerator, but the planning decisions are made by Cumbria County Council. Cumbria County Council have admitted "errors" in its handling of the planning application, but the errors remain uncorrected. Following legal advice, we are advised the planning applications have expired, but Cumbria County Council persists with this ridiculous situation and says "the extension to the commencement date for the development stands". Complaints have also been made about the Environment Agency's handling of the public consultation process for the necessary permit application. A legal challenge may be the only way for residents to get justice.
Thanks to the generous donations we have received, we believe we now have sufficient funds to instruct a solicitor. Additional funds will give us more flexibility and options, and it is difficult to know at this stage how much money will be needed. Please support us if you can. We will use your gift as effectively as we can to stop the incinerator.
Should the plans to build the incinerator be withdrawn, and if we think the possibility of a future Carlisle incinerator is minimal, any remaining funds will go to support the work of UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) whose support in fighting the Carlisle incinerator has been invaluable.

3 years agoWe believe we now have sufficient funds to instruct a solicitor. Thank you to everyone who has donated. We really appreciate every gift. Not all gifts have come through JustGiving and I want to say a particular thank you to the very generous support of Lauren and Becky Holmes – two sisters who grew up enjoying the beauty of Cumbria and want to help ensure it’s protected for future generations.

It's not just Stanwix that will be affected. Depending on the wind strength and direction all the greater Carlisle area could suffer

Incredible that anyone could even consider burning 250,000 tonnes of rubbish a year, within 1 km of a housing estate and school.
