    Story

Coco is a miniature smooth haired Dachshund. She is 5 years old and had a rough start in life, we rescued her 3 years ago and she has slowly built up her confidence and although she will always struggle a little with nervousness and anxiety she now leads a happy safe life with us.

Last week we were out walking our usual route done a thousand times before, down the farmers orchard path only ever used by the farmer himself who always slows down to wave or stop and chat. Unfortunately out of the blue on this day a jeep full of people i can only presume seeking adventure comes roaring down and my little Coco on hearing it frightened comes running to me and being small and close to the ground, chocolate colour and blending in with the countryside the driver not seeing her she goes straight under one of the wheels, i mean i saw it literally roll over her. The world seemed to freeze and i thought i was going to be sick, i was sure she couldn't have survived. I heard the sickening yelping and i must have come round and i ran straight over pick her up and rushed her to the vet.

It was out of hours so i called him and he came straight to the surgery, although it felt like ages he was actually really quick getting there. He quickly saw she was pale and going in to shock so admitted her to get that under control before any physical examination could take place as he was worried she wouldn't survive the shock.

After an agonising wait overnight she stabilised and in the morning the vet was able to examine and xray her, find if there was any internal bleeding and run tests to see if all her organs were functioning properly. By some miracle there didn't appear to be any damage to her internal organs but the xrays showed a fractured pelvis and broken hip bone.

The first surgery was performed later that day with my vet advising a further surgery may be needed if when its healed the hip bone keeps popping out of the socket. In this case there will be 2 options - either the ball on the end of the bone can be removed so the bone floats in the socket supported by muscles and ligaments, which will just cause a limp but will work fine or the other option to put a metal pin right through to connect to the other side. A decision to made down the line but apparently a very high chance that it will be needed.

Coco was kept in for observation and specialist medicines at the vets for the last week. We visited her every day which was super hard and upsetting as she was so lifeless and depressed, not even lifting her head when she saw us. Yesterday we got to take her home but the bad news is she has to recover in a small cage for 2 months!! This is so she can't move around as she needs to keep all weight off her pelvis and leg. She is still on medication for pain and anti inflammatories for a while yet. We have a long road ahead of us of 2 months recovery she will then need physiotherapy, or another operation, recovery and then physio although i'm told the recovery for that operation won't be as long.

I take all the responsibility for Coco's care bill. My first thoughts were my dog and i didn't even consider the costs that would be involved but now she is out of danger i'm am worried sick how i am going to pay the vets bill. I have managed to plead with his kind nature and he has allowed me to pay over 3 instalments, one every 2 weeks so i have 6 weeks to pay but the bill i have of £1480 is the current total and doesn't include any further surgeries or physiotherapy.

I had many sleepless nights thinking about whether to set up this page for fear of being abused and judged but when complete strangers reached out to me to show their support and encouraged me to do this and offering their help i was so touched and so i realised i can't let my fears and pride stand in my way. Here it is, yes i don't have a lot of money and the little i have goes to supporting my 2 young children, 5 rescue dogs, 2 rescue cats and currently 2 foster dogs. Any donations are very very gratefully received and i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. Coco needed another surgery as unfortunately the hip bone wasn't being held in place and this required further treatment. The vet talked us through a couple of options for the procedure and after weighing it up we went with the less invasive one and a quicker recovery time, also less risks involved. An even bigger vets bill now but needs must. On a positive note though the pelvic fracture healed beautifully so that's good news. She's been through so much. Hoping it's the final hurdle, fingers crossed.

Coco is now completely off the medication and it really has done wonders for her mood. I'm guessing whilst relieving the pain and preventing infection they were also keeping her a little drowsy and lethargic as she has a little wag in her tail again! Never has such a simple action been more welcome. It really is wonderful. All we need now is time to pass for the bones and muscles to heal, 4 weeks down 4 to go. Seems to be passing slowly but things can't be rushed. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support, We're really very grateful. X
