Story
May 2On April 11th, 2018, I will be taking part in a 10K 'Chase the sun' run around the streets of London. I am hoping to try and raise £150 or more to help support the charity, 'Project Period'. It was created by some close friends of mine, who will be going out to Kenya this summer to help teach girls about menstrual cups, so that they are able to live more confidently and happily, without their periods having any impact on their education. Please help me raise as much as I can so that these fantastic girls are able to take as many cups as they can to Kenya! It's a great cause so get donating :)

Project Period is a campaign started by Nina Cassells. A 17 year old who visited Kibera and wanted to do something to prevent girls from missing school because of their period. Up until now this problem has been dealt with by giving the girls sanitary towels, an unsustainable solution. Now she is working with a group of young girls whose aim is to provide girls in Kibera, Kenya with menstrual cups to help them complete their education.
On average, girls who can’t afford sanitary products will miss two months of school, and those who can have to constantly rely on external organisations which hinder their independence as young women. Our aim is to give these girls a sustainable solution to help them take control over their bodies and their futures.
Education is key for young adults living in slums, such as Kibera, to improve and grow their lives. For girls, attending school is made harder by the fact they don’t have the tools to handle their menstruation so are forced to stay at home. Over this time they are missing crucial hours of school which could impact their future.
The menstrual cup cost £20 and can last up to 5 years, providing it is cared for correctly. This gives girls the responsibility every woman should have over their own body. It also means they don’t have to worry about their next period, and can instead concentrate on their education.
Any donation, whether big or small will be immensely helpful for this project. We, a small group of girls who are creating Project Period, are lucky enough to live in a world where we can easily buy sanitary products whenever we need them. Our periods do not result in us missing weeks or months of school. But these products are necessities- not luxuries. Every woman- no matter what part of the world she's in, should have total access to sanitary products because it is what her body demands once a month. That's the reality of it. So the money we raise for the menstrual cups for these young girls in Kenya will ensure they, like us, can get the proper education that they have a right to.
