Following the birth of our son, Sebastian, we decided we wanted to raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( NICU) in Burnley as a thank you for everything they did for our son during the first six days of his life.

In order to raise funds and show our gratitude on the 2nd September 2018 I will be taking on the Manchester 100k ride along with a friend and neighbour, Dale.

Shortly after Sebastian was born it was clear that he was struggling to breathe on his own. He was taken to the NICU after only a 30 second cuddle with his mummy.

Sebastian was in an incubator and on 40% oxygen (any higher he would have been on a ventilator). Sebastian‘s lungs were filled with mucas. After 3 days of treatment and medication his infection rate had reduced by half and he was able to start feeding through a feeding tube in his nose. After 6 days he was well enough to come home with us.

The doctors and nurses at NICU are amazing, they are always on hand for any questions you may have or any assistance you may need. They were always accommodating no matter if you are sitting there all day or if you call in the middle of the night just to double check everything is okay.

Without a doubt NICU saved our little boys life and we are lucky that they were available to us within minutes.

I’m sure that most of you probably know someone who’s child or your own child has been treated at NICU and if so, you will know the amazing job that they do on a daily basis.
