Story
Sea Turtles are under threat in Sri Lanka with plastic pollution being a major issue as turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish.
Female turtles will only lay their eggs on beaches which are safe and clean. The beaches in Sri Lanka are littered with rubbish so clearing them is imperative if the turtles are to use them.
Another major threat is Fishing. Sea turtles are often found in fishing nets and many have been disabled and can no longer survive in the wild.
I am volunteering to join the turtle rehabilitation centre to assist the team. My duties will include litter picking on the nesting beeches, caring for injured turtles and protecting the nesting sites from poachers.
The project also includes teaching the local people the importance of protecting these amazing creatures and encouraging turtle conservation at a community level to bring about long term change.

Ed Gray: this summer I am volunteering to help in a turtle sanctuary in Sri Lanka. As part of my fundraising I am arranging a two day litter pick of the highway verges around my village, Dalston.
