Weʼve raised £1,030 to support long-term physiotherapy, rehabilitation and training. My right elbow got severely fractured and I wish to rescue 90/95% function.

    Story

Hi! I am a researcher who loves sports. I grew up doing swimming and I moved to basket and volleyball when I was 14. I discovered a passion for playing soccer only when I was 19. I stopped playing it only when I was 30 in order to cope with a lot of pressure and reduced free time when I decided to go back to academia... I am doing a PhD in Computational Biology, to study the link between cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders, which have often been associated to mutations of the same genes. Few weeks ago I was playing soccer with colleagues from the cancer research campus in which I am working and when the match was reaching its end I was a bit unlucky. While trying to anticipate my opponent, just after touching the ball with my left foot, I slipped on a hole in the field and I lost equilibrium. I ended up on the palm of my right hand and all my weight pushed my forearm against my elbow. I had 2 of the 3 bones fractured in three points and probably lost some ligaments. I was shocked but I tried to stay calm. One of the guys playing with me was able to take a picture of me trying to smile (you can see it above) to show to my girlfriend I was fine before they put me on the ambulance. It's a mess. I was lucky to find a good surgeon at the hospital which received me but unfortunately, in these cases, surgery is just the beginning. I stayed in hospital for 11 days. They put 3 screws in my elbow and I have to keep the arm blocked for 2 months. They may decide to remove the screws after 1 or 2 years. I must hope I won't have calcifications at my tendons and I will have to work every day to gain and to keep at most 90% of rotation, bending and strength. It will take 6 months to have clear results, and 1 year to have the best possible results. With this arm I need to write, draw and to use the keyboard as soon as possible at least to work. I have a list of things I want to be able to do again, among which opening jars for my family, cooking and playing drums. I will share my achievements here with all my supporters. With this money my aim is to do all the possible physiotherapy (I need at least 3 months), rehabilitation and training in order to get back to less traumatic sports and to take part to a marathon next spring and, if I am lucky, to a spartan race in July 2018. If you will pledge me with more than my goal I will use that money to fund other crowdfundings aimed at building sport facilities for youngsters.

January Updates Part 2/2 Unfortunately, besides a very fast initial recovery I have been a bit stuck in the last 2 weeks, eventually even losing some mobility. I am now under NSAIDs (FANS in italian) and ice for at least 4 days. This means I will have to do more physiotherapy and go back to the previous deadline of June 2018 for a good recovery. I could not start intense training or running: only minor exercises to gain back some strenght. In March I will start going to the swimming pool to do some isometric exercise in water.

I have been updating everybody via public facebook posts - they were too long to be posted here - and I decided to start a blog (link below). Donations arrived until now were critical to help me afford physiotherapy so thanks everybody! https://puramlucemfero.blogspot.it/2017/12/p-margin-bottom-0.html

I have been thinking a lot about doing this. I know there is a lot of people in bigger needs than mine. Unfortunately in Italy being a scientist means struggling with basic expenses and I know I will have to choose between paying the rent and curing my elbow in the best way.
